Vision Sciences Research Corporation's (VSRC) patented Functional Acuity Contrast Test (FACT) is an accurate and comprehensive sine-wave grating chart that tests functional vision and is the preferred new ANSI standard. Developed by Dr. Arthur Ginsburg, the FACT sine-wave grating chart tests five spatial frequencies (sizes) and nine levels of contrast. The patient determines the last grating seen for each row and reports the orientation of the grating: right, up or left. The last correct grating seen for each spatial frequency is plotted on a contrast sensitivity curve.

FACT contrast sensitivity scores can also be used to generate images with VSRC's EyeView Functional Vision Analysis Software that demonstrates how the world looks to your patient based on their contrast sensitivity scores.

M&S Technologies Inc. and Jack T. Holladay, M.D., M.S.E.E., F.A.C.S. have developed the Holladay Automated Contrast Sensitivity System (HACSS), a CSF System with rotationally symmetric targets. Sinusoidal Bull's Eye optotypes are presented with progressively lower contrasts to provide a technician-free, computer-driven system that significantly reduces the time for testing to 10 minutes average per eye with tighter precision and standard deviation.

HACSS provides standardized photopic and mesopic illuminations with certification on brightness, contrast and color temperature. The system is designed with a patient-interactive testing mechanism that eliminates technician bias and the Bulls-eye optotype eliminates bias with vertical gratings. HACSS provides automatic report printing, graphing and output to any media for data collection.

Precision Visions' Mixed Contrast Reading Card (MCC) shows an aspect of contrast processing that is independent of detail processing. Created by August Colenbrander, M.D. and Donald C. Fletcher, M.D., the MCC aims to make testing easier and less time consuming. The test is meant to be a screening test for contrast sensitivity deficits.

The MC test uses reading, rather than letter acuity as its measurement. This is important when considering retinal conditions, since reading involves a larger retinal area than letter recognition. The MC test also shows both high-contrast and low-contrast targets on the same side of the card, ensuring that both are read at the same distance and under the same illumination.

Stereo Optical Inc.'s new OPTEC 6500 controls both target illumination and glare luminance levels for accurate and repeatable testing results. The OPTEC 6500 allows users the choice of testing with Sine Wave (the Functional Acuity Contrast Test) or letter testing (Contrast Acuity Test). The 6500 includes EyeView functional vision analysis software that graphs, interprets and stores contrast sensitivity results. The 6500 offers binocular and monocular glare testing and its background illuminance complies with international standards.

Stereo Optical states that the OPTEC 6500 is the most widely used instrument in clinical trials requiring the use of contrast sensitivity and glare testing and in refractive and cataract surgical practices to describe to patients surgical outcomes.
